Eastlea ranked first in the Year 9 boys’ category at the London Youth Rowing Games held at the University of East London. Eastlea Community School student Henry Abbott beat students from eight schools across London to win the gold medal, with a second outstanding performance from fellow student Alexander Ivanov who won the silver medal in the Year 8 category.

This is just one of several recent sporting successes for Eastlea whose Year 11 football team has beaten Little Ilford School and Bobby Moore Academy to reach the Semi-Final of the Newham Cup and Years 7&8 and Year 9 netball teams are both standing second in the Newham Netball League.

Eastlea Community School boasts exceptional indoor and outdoor sporting facilities with extensive playing and cricket fields and encourages all students to take part in sport with a vast array of clubs and fixtures including table tennis, rugby and basketball on offer. A full-time cricket coach has recently been added to the PE staff team and further sports are planned for the extra-curricular timetable this summer including dodgeball, athletics and badminton.

Eastlea joined the high-performing Newham Community Schools Trust in January 2021 and benefits from experienced leadership with a track record of school improvement. Its partnership with the Trust’s highly-regarded Lister Community School, Rokeby School and Sarah Bonnell School provides students with opportunities for collaboration and access to a variety of enrichment opportunities.

Headteacher Sarah Morgan said: “Eastlea’s sporting success reflects the extraordinary progress Eastlea has already made in all areas of the broad and engaging curriculum offer since joining the Trust, including our recent ranking in eighth place out of 700 secondary schools for student progress on the Bedrock Vocabulary online learning tool.

“The motivation of our students to continue to build on this remarkable success is palpable and we invite prospective families to visit Eastlea and experience our welcoming and vibrant school community and excellent facilities first-hand.”
